Club World Championship 2026: Eight Clubs, Four Continents and a Gap Nobody Has Measured

Three weeks later, the FIVB released the list of eight clubs for the 2026 Men's Volleyball Club World Championship in Poland. That backcourt dig suddenly became the opening line of a much larger story.

Eight clubs, four continents, one host nation

The list stretches across four continents. Perugia arrive from Italy as reigning club world champions and freshly crowned CEV Champions League winners. Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil carry five Club World Championship titles, the most in the history of the competition. Vôlei Renata also come from Brazil. Asia contributes Foolad Sirjan Iranian of Iran and Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi of Indonesia, the first Indonesian men's club to win a continental title. Africa is represented by Al Ahly of Egypt. Turkey appears for the first time with Ziraat.

Poland will host two consecutive editions, 2026 and 2027, yet no Polish club is on the eight-team list. Details on format, schedule and ticketing will be announced later.

For those who follow Southeast Asian volleyball, the notable point sits elsewhere. A men's club from the region is in the field for the first time, but Indonesia's presence does not mean the whole region has progressed. Every arena is a universe, and I am the one who loves connecting the constellations — this time, the constellation is still missing a star where Vietnam should be.

The gap lives at the seventh and eighth spots

Seven years of covering volleyball taught me a habit when reading a team list: do not look at the first names, look at the seventh and eighth players in the rotation. That is where the distance between volleyball nations becomes visible, not in the star.

Perugia tick both boxes. They play in Serie A, the strongest domestic league in Europe, where even a bench place would start for most other clubs. Their roster features Simone Giannelli at setter and Oleh Plotnytskyi on the wing, two names in the world's elite. The more telling detail is depth: a squad thick enough to rotate in mid-December, while Serie A runs in parallel.

Sada Cruzeiro sit on the other side in a different sense. Five world titles did not come from a single gifted generation but from a system run continuously for years. That kind of experience carries its own value in knockout matches, where one bad rally can end a season.

The middle group — Vôlei Renata, Foolad Sirjan Iranian, Al Ahly — are all continental champions, but they step into a game whose speed and height differ sharply from their familiar surroundings. At home, a two-metre attacker is a weapon. At the Club World Championship, that is average.

In Asia, Foolad Sirjan Iranian represent the ball-control, multi-layered defence style long familiar in Iran. That style has troubled European sides in friendlies, yet in a short tournament, endurance matters less than explosiveness. Al Ahly of Egypt represent Africa, the region with the fewest appearances at this event.

Ziraat and Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi are the two unknowns. Ziraat have resources from the Turkish Super League but have never proved themselves at world club level. Jakarta have made history for Indonesia, yet that history was written in Asia.

The format is expected to follow recent editions: eight teams in two groups, then knockout rounds. Such a format rewards consistency, as two group wins all but secure a semi-final place, while a team that loses its opener must win out. For debutants, fate is often decided inside the first set.

One factor rarely mentioned is geography. São Paulo to Poland is a flight of roughly ten thousand kilometres, Jakarta nearly the same, with a four-to-six-hour time difference. European clubs sleep at home. In a short tournament, a week of adjusting to a new time zone and body clock is a considerable asset.

The counter-intuitive angle

Media will tell the story of a globalised tournament, with four continents in the field. That reading hides another reality: the event expands through continental invitations, not through a mechanism that filters teams out over several rounds. The number of representatives grows; the gap at the top does not shrink.

Perugia's biggest risk is not Sada Cruzeiro but the calendar. An Italian side with a congested fixture list may have to manage its personnel, and even then their bench outguns most opponents' starting six. Volleyball does not run on paper. Tactics are poetry; you only need to know how to read between the gaps.

An easily missed detail: Poland hosts without a Polish club. For a country among Europe's strongest volleyball markets, absence from its own tournament leaves a hole in the ticketing story, and keeps open the possibility of a late wild card.

For Jakarta, the revolution did not begin with the opening whistle but with a quiet pass in the backcourt of an Asian final. The question is whether that club gets another match, then another season, so the moment does not dissolve into memory.

What to watch

The value of the 2026 edition may not lie in the trophy. It lies in whether a debutant is given a second chance by the format, whether Sada Cruzeiro prove that a system outlasts a budget, and whether Perugia stay focused when everything favours them.

What Vietnamese volleyball must answer does not sit in a ticket to Poland. It sits elsewhere: when will we have a club sustainable enough to complete a continental season without falling apart over money? Indonesia answered that question this year.
